Activity 6.3
Missions Compared

By now, you are familiar with Ben and Jerry's business philosophy and know that they make a real effort to carry out their mission statement. For this activity, you are going to evaluate another company's philosophy. You have two options for this activity.

Choose only one option.
OPTION 1
OPTION 2
Find the mission statement of the company you work for or one you frequent a lot. You may find this mission statement by checking the following areas:
  • web site
  • employee manual
  • manager interview

other company publications

Once you find the mission statement, you are to follow these three steps:

1. Write down the mission statement.

2. Write a paragraph explaining whether or not you think the company follows their mission statement based on your experience as a frequent customer or an employee.

3. Write a second paragraph explaining how this company's business philosophy is the same as or different than Ben and Jerry's.

If the company you work for does not have a mission statement, or it cannot be found, or you don't think the company follows the one it has, write a new mission statement for this company.

You'll complete this assignment by following these two steps:

1. Create a mission statement for the company of your choice by creating a parody of Ben and Jerry's mission statement on page 46. To parody means to copy in a humorous or sarcastic way (e.g. Weird Al does many parodies of songs).

2. Write a paragraph explaining how this "new mission statement" reflects how the company really operates based on your experience as a frequent customer or employee.

3. Write a second paragraph explaining how this company's business philosophy is the same as or different than Ben and Jerry's.
