CAL Online
History

Current CAL Online teachers identified the following skills/personality traits needed to be a successful online teacher:

  • Willing to think of teaching in a different way

  • Good organizational skills

  • Good technology skills

  • Dedication

  • Discipline

  • Patience

  • Knowledge of course content

  • Flexibility of time

  • Ability to change work schedule

It is important to realize that with online teaching:

  • Grading takes longer with online assignments

  • It is important to do online teaching in a concentrated block of time at the beginning or end of the day

  • Teaching is different than teaching face-to-face

  • Communicating with students is different than face-to-face

  • Relationships with students are different than face-to-face (students are more honest and willing to share things via email that they would not share face-to-face)

Online teachers report that they know students are being successful:

  • When students complete assignments in a timely manner

  • When students complete assignments in exemplary ways

  • When students email a “thank you” note

  • When parent or students say everything is ok when the teacher calls them on the phone
