Lesson 4.04 - Roaring Culture

OBJECTIVE

You will explore the pop culture of the 1920’s especially as expressed by the changing fashions for young people.

GUIDING QUESTION

  1. What is the role of popular culture in the development of the image of the Roaring 20’s.
  2. Have times changed or are today’s youth governed by similar influences.

DISCUSSION

A few things truly define the youth of a generation.  This is as true today as it was 80 years ago.  Music, dance and fashion!  Simply say the 60’s, 70’s or even 80’s (my generation) and immediately you have images that define the era.

Assignment 4.04 - Roaring Culture

ASSIGNMENT

A. Create a PowerPoint presentation covering the three main topics – music, dance and fashion.  Compare Music, Dance and Fashion of the 1920’s to the music, dance and fashion that you feel defines YOUR generation.  Be sure to include audio, video, images and text in your presentation that help illustrate your point.  Create a MINIMUM of 2 slides for each of the three categories.  The slide presentation should somewhat follow this outline:

  • Slide 1 – Introduction with your name and date
  • Slide 2 – 1920s music – what it was – include picture, explanation (and sample music if you can)
  • Slide 3 – 2000s music – what it was – include picture, explanation (and sample music if you can)
  • Slide 4 – 1920s dance – what it was – include picture and explanation
  • Slide 5 – 2000s dance – what it was – include picture and explanation
  • Slide 6 - 1920s fashion – what it was – include picture and explanation
  • Slide 7 - 2000s fashion – what it was – include picture and explanation
  • Slide 8 – Analysis – how are music, dance and fashion similar and different from 1920 to 2005?

B. When you have finished your PowerPoint go the Assignment Area and click “View/Complete Assignment – 4.04 Roaring Culture”.  Attach your PowerPoint and click “Submit”.  NOTE:  If you included lots of music or video in your presentation you may need to send me a disk with you presentation burned onto it.  Audio/video is usually not stored in the PowerPoint itself but on YOUR hard drive.  If this is the case the audio/video will NOT play on my computer if you just attach it in the Assignment Area or attach it to an e-mail you send to me.  You don’t have to have audio/video in you presentation but it will increase your score.  If you decide to mail it to me just send it to my home:  6536 E. Kerckhoff  Fresno, Ca 93727.  Remember this will take a few days to get to me so plan ahead.

C. HJ 4.2 – A Day in the Life of a Bootlegger/Flapper.  Write one paragraph in you journal chronicling a day in the life of a bootlegger of flapper.  Men will write from the perspective of a bootlegger and ladies will write from the perspective of a flapper (not that all bootleggers were men, although I’m pretty sure all flappers were women…not sure if they had ‘drag’ back then).
