DISCUSSION:
From twenty stories
up, a dapper young Wall Street businessman peers over the edge and
reflects on the events that have brought him to this point. It seems
like only yesterday he had it all…
A shiny black Model
T, a snappy new suit, rounds for friends at the local speakeasy, and
the lingering aroma of a flapper’s perfume, all afforded by his keen
ability to turn a quick profit in the stock market. Sure, he was
using other people’s money, but wasn’t everyone getting rich?
He never could have
guessed that it would end so quickly. The stock market crashed and
he was ruined. He can’t see himself homeless, in bread lines, and
fighting for a spot to sell apples on the street corner. He could
apply for a coveted public works job out west, but there were no
guarantees.

“Clean Plates”
My Grandfather's family lived on a sustainable
farm in Colorado in the early 1930's. When the bad weather and
dry times came that ruined the farmers, The Foley's tried to
hold on for a long time. Grandfather told me how my
great-grandmother cooked only enough food to put one helping on
each persons plate, food for 6 children and two adults, and no
more. If you didn't get to the table, you really might not eat!
Also, when she used part of an egg in a recipe, she put the
other part in a cup, sprinkled it with a tiny bit of sugar, and
gave it to the nearest child to drink. Nothing of nutritional
value would go to waste. Finally, hard times really came and my
grandfather witnessed the home, the farm, the livestock, almost
every piece of their furniture, beds, dressers, chairs and
tables, the contents of their household and their lives, be
auctioned. What they had left were clothes and what furniture
they could save crammed in the back of a wagon. They took this
wagon to Missouri. Grandfather never forgot the trip and only
spoke once to me of the auction. And naturally, every child at
Grandfather's table had to clean their plates before they left
the table. No food would go to waste, nothing was going in his
kitchen garbage can.
