Lesson 7.01 - American Money/Aid to Stop Communism

OBJECTIVE
This lesson will examine how various American policies sought to avoid military conflict with the Soviet Union and set the stage for increased tension between the two nations.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  1. What types of aid were provided by the United States to nations around the globe to halt the spread of Communism?
  2. How does the developing crisis in Berlin represent a snapshot of the entire Cold War?
  3. Could the Cold War have been avoided?    What was the United States goal in trying to stop the spread of Communism?  Were our intentions simply to help those being subjugated by a stronger nation or did we have ulterior motives?

DISCUSSION
Some one once said you find out who your true friends are when you run out of money.  Ok, well maybe it was me who just said it but I have found it to be true.  In the days, weeks and months following

World War II many European nations, many of whom had been our allies and enemies during the conflict were struggling to survive.  They need assistance in the form of food, fuel and clothing.  Cities were destroyed and industry was almost nonexistent. Who would help?  In a race to develop allies both the United States and the Soviet Union made plans to attract these destitute countries.  For the Soviet Union, who herself had been decimated by WWII, the tactic included illegal elections, puppet governments and armed force.  The United States, wanting to appear to have nobler intentions choose a different route.

Assignment 7.01 - American Money/Aid To Communism

For this assignment you will establish three significant policies/events of the early days of the Cold War.  The tension that arose from these events shaped many of the future interactions between the two Superpowers (The United States and The Soviet Union) and the rest of the world.

  1. In a Word document copy and paste the matrix given below.  This IS NOT a graphic organizer so you DO NOT need to put any information in each of the boxes.  ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS PUT AN “X IN EACH OF THE BOXES THAT APPLIES.  For example if the Marshall Plan provided monetary support as well as supplies then you would put an “X” in both boxes.  If it was only one or the other then only put the “X” in the ones that apply. Using the websites below, complete the matrix.

  1. After you have finished matrix answer the following questions in the same Word document.

    • What was the Truman Doctrine and why were some Americans opposed to it?
    • What factors led to the Marshall Plan?  What do you think was the “real” reason America launched the Marshal Plan?
    • How did America and Soviet plans for post-war Germany differ?
    • Why did Stalin close off access to West Berlin?  What were the effects of this decision on the citizens of West Berlin?
    • Who “won” the 1948-1949 Berlin Crises?  Explain.  How did this “victory” help the image if the winner and hurt the image of the loser?

  2. After completing the questions to the Assignment Area and click on “View/Complete Assignment – 7.01 Origins of the Cold War”.  Attach your Word document and click “Submit”.

  3. HJ7.1 – Berlin Airlift:  Add an entry to your History Journal.  Imagine that you were a pilot participating in the effort to bring needed supplies to the people in the city of Berlin.  Write 1-2 paragraphs describing what it was like as you landed your plane and began to unload the precious cargo for he desperate people of Berlin.  Refer back to the following web site for great information: http://www.spiritoffreedom.org/
