DISCUSSION

As the Soviet Union continued to exert her influence in Europe, the flames of communist revolution were being fanned elsewhere in the world.  For over two decades Communists in China had been struggling to gain power.  The United States had supported the efforts of the Chinese Nationalists and their leader Chiang Kai-shek.  From 1944-1947 the United States sent billions of dollars in aid to help the resistance efforts of the Chinese Nationalists.  In the first true test of his containment policy, President Truman was unwilling to send in American troops to help with the conflict.

In the end financial assistance would not be enough to turn the tide and in May of 1949 the Communist prevailed and established the People’s Republic of China.  Many Americans had believed that efforts to contain communism would prevail and were shocked to learn that the most populated country in the world had fallen to the communists.  How long would it be until the policy of containment would be put to the test again?  Where would the next threat come from?  Southeast Asia provided the stage for Cold War conflicts that engrossed the United States attention for the next30 years.  The next series of conflicts would require more than financial support from the United States…yet in the end the results would be much the same.  Did containment succeed or was more conflict on the horizon?
