Lesson 7.05 - Cold War Timeline

OBJECTIVE
Gain an overview perspective of events that played pivotal roles in the Cold War.

DISCUSSION
The Cold War was very often a war of idea and manipulation.  Occasionally the Superpowers inched closer to actually engaging one another on the field of battle.  In the early years after World War II, the United States held the upper hand as the only nations to have a deliverable atomic bomb.  As the Soviet Union revealed their atomic power (using stolen information from Manhattan Project) the United States began to search for new ways to gain the advantage.  More often than not, conflict between the two nations was by proxy.  One nation supporting another nation who was being attacked by another nation supported by another nation!?  Sound confusing?  Well very often it was difficult to tell whom we were actually fight much less whether we were winning or not.  In the final analysis the Cold War (especially the late-40’s thru the mid-60’s) can be charted by gradual period of “heating up” and gradual periods of “cooling off”.

Assignment 7.05 - Cold War Timelime

  1. Cold War Timeline (Use Chapter 18, 19, & 20 in your textbook).

For each date listed in the Cold War Timeline document attached below find a significant event that caused the Cold War to “heat” up!  In some cases an event may be obvious.  In some cases you may have to choose between multiple events for the same year (in this case it is best to pick the event that in your opinion caused the Cold War to HEAT up the most!).  Once you have events for each of the years create a PowerPoint “timeline” describing each event and how it caused the Cold War to “HEAT” up.  Put two events on each slide.  Use 18-point font for your text and 20-point BOLD font for headings.  Each event should include a picture or graphic.  You can download the document below to help you organize your information before you put it into PowerPoint.
