9.00 – Module Overview
OBJECTIVE – This lesson will serve as
an overview for Module 9. The
Module Study Guide will be a valuable tool to help you prepare for
the Module Test.
| DISCUSSION – At the end
of World War II Southeast Asia was posed on the edge of what
would prove to be many years of turmoil.
Before World War II, much of
Southeast Asia
was being controlled as a French colony.
During the war much of that control slipped away to the
Japanese but after their defeat the French were first in line
to regain their old colonies, especially
Vietnam
. Many Vietnamese
people had been organizing efforts to gain their independence
since the 1920’s. |
| Ho Chi Minh had become the acknowledged leader
of the Vietnamese push for independence, the only problem…he
was a Communist. While
the Allied forces were glad that the Communists were causing
problems for the Japanese during World War II, they
(especially France) were in no mood to simply hand the country
over to the Communist. Like
many of the other conflicts of the Cold War the
United States
was assuming he role of mediator.
Little did we know that we were on the precipice of
America
’s longest war. |
