Lesson 9.05 - America's Longest War Comes to a Close

OBJECTIVE – To understand what factors let to America ’s withdrawal from Vietnam .  In addition, students should understand the long term effects of the war in Vietnam and the subsequent take over of the Communist regime.

DISCUSSION – When Richard Nixon moved into the White House in 1969 things had not improved much in Vietnam .  He was determined to get the United States out of the conflict but the execution of this objective proved to be more difficult than first imagined.  Nixon goal was to affect a “peace with honor” where much of the gains in South Vietnam would be perpetuated after the withdrawal of American troops.  While many Americans still supported the Presidents and understood the quandary of trying to remove our forces, protests and further controversy surrounded the conflict.  Finally on March 29th, 1973 the last American soldiers came home.  The peace with honor plan proved only to be a dream as North Vietnamese Communist violated the cease-fire agreement within months of the United States pull out.  By the time Communist forces moved into Saigon almost two years later, America was embrolled in the Watergate scandal.  The war left a painful scar on many people.
