MODULE 6 OVERVIEW

The assassination of Francis Ferdinand touched off a complex chain of events that ended in the Grand War.  Every European power took part and even the United States became embroiled in the conflict.

What caused the first World War of the twentieth century?  To this point you have studied several modules that have led to this event.  World War I was an outgrowth of earlier movements that included:

  • Nationalism
  • Industrialization
  • Imperialism

Like the French Revolution and other turning points in World History, World War I had many interwoven causes.  Some had roots in the deep past.   Other may have seemed trivial after the war had begun.  In this module, you will learn how nationalism, industrialization and imperialism led to World War I, about World War I and the aftermath.
